GM Varuzhan Akobian wins World Chess Open in Armageddon play-off

The 41st Annual World Open was held on June 29th – July 7th, 2013, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Virginia.

A 10-way tie for first place in the Open Section led to an Armageddon play-off game between the two players with the best tie-break scores.

This game was contested by GM Quesada Yuniesky, with white, against GM Varuzhan Akobian. Yuniesky had 5 minutes to Akobian’s 3 minutes and draw odds. The play-off game finished in a draw and GM Varuzhan Akobian became the 2013 World Open Champion.(more)

'Ray Robson won the strong Chicago Open on Monday with a score of 7/9. The 18-year-old American grandmaster edged out GMs Joshua Friedel and Nikolai Mitkov on tiebreak (modified median).

The tournament drew over 20 grandmasters, including Aleksandr Lenderman and Victor Mikhalevski. The 22nd annual Chicago Open was held May 23-27 and organized by the Continental Chess Association.

The venue was the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel in Wheeling, Illinois. In 2010 Loek van Wely won, in 2011 Timur Gareev, in 2012 Gabriel Sargissian and this year Ray Robson took the title of Chicago Open Champion. Robson (18), who became a grandmaster just before turning 15, is a freshman at Webster University.

Robson finished on 7/9 together with Josh Friedel and Nikolai Mitkov, but had the best tiebreak.(more)'

The 7th Annual Philadelphia Open was held over the Easter week from March 27-31, 2013, at the upscale, luxury Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
 
 Cuban GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez and IM Daniel Naroditsky finished at the top of the Open Section with 7/9. Both players led from the front, each winning 5 games and drawing 4.
 
 Corrales Jimenez collected $4,827 for his efforts, which included the 1st place bonus by virtue of having a better tie-break score while Naroditsky collected $4,658. Naroditsky’s score was also good enough for a GM norm.
 
 IM norms were scored by FM Adarsh Jayakumar, FM Jeffery Xiong, FM Arthur Shen and Adithya Balasubramanian.
